Camouflage: The Incense Burner Suit

Animals in nature possess the remarkable ability to hide themselves through camouflage, seamlessly blending into their surroundings. Fascinated by this phenomenon, Xuefei Chen sought to express this natural gift through her unique collection of incense burner suits.

The Camouflage collection is the result of Chen's meticulous analysis of animal behaviors and movements. By recording and summarizing the shapes and lines observed in nature, she translated them into stunning 3D designs. The incense burner suits, made using 3D printing, soldering, casting, polishing, gold plating, and molding techniques, capture the essence of these creatures' movements.

Each incense burner suit in the collection is a work of art, meticulously crafted from brass and silver. The 3D printed wax casts are transformed into intricate brass and metal finishes, resulting in stunning pieces that are both functional and visually captivating.

The incense burner suits are designed to be interactive, with containers, brushes, and holders incorporated into their structure. They can be used with both incense sticks and incense cones, allowing users to create a sensory experience that is both visually and aromatically pleasing.

The Camouflage collection was developed over the course of several months, starting in September 2016 and concluding in May 2017. It was exhibited at The School of Jewellery in Birmingham in June 2017, showcasing the unique blend of artistry and functionality that defines Chen's work.

Chen's research for this collection included visits to various museums and aquariums, where she studied the intricate details of sea creatures, insects, bones, textures, and patterns. She sketched and recorded her observations, combining primary research with online resources to gain a comprehensive understanding of animal camouflage in nature.

One of the main challenges Chen faced was the transition from 2D sketches to 3D designs. This required problem-solving skills and a keen eye for detail. Through her perseverance and creative thinking, she successfully transformed complex lines into functional structures that embody the essence of animal movements.

The Camouflage collection has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Limited Edition and Custom Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
